I’m an Artist and Filmmaker who grew up in the world of theatre where the art of imagination knows no bounds.

My Nanna always said I was born in the wrong era. I guess that is partially true. Most of my inspiration comes from the past, from those who walked before me. The pioneers of filmmaking, the actors of ‘yesteryear’, the Blues men and their sonic storytelling and the performance artists who long ago figured out how to create spectacular art from nothing.

BUT I am a product of Now.

I was born in a digital world, and I love the potential modern day multimedia technology has to offer me as an artist. Years of being confined to theatres and concrete structures are gone. The street becomes the stage and the audience is everywhere.

Anything is possible to achieve with imagination.

Art is not about the money behind BUT the scope of the mind in front.

Digging a little deeper

From an interview with King Ink Magazine 2010

Q: Tell us a little about your background

A: I actually trained to be an actor so I come from an acting/theatrical background. However instead of just focusing on acting, I wanted to learn about the creation of the art too so I also worked behind the scenes as a way to understand the creative process more. It was perfect, as the backstage of a theatre is a wonderful environment to learn about the art of illusion and creating magic.
Eventually it became stale as I was focusing on creating other peoples work and I no longer wanted to realize someone else’s vision as I had my own. I guess the magic just faded. I wanted to create my own art worlds so I decided to move in a different direction and did intensive training in multi-media, learning everything from video production to digital art. During the training, I began doing freelance work as a digital designer and began funding my own creative works. Using everything I’d learned, I started creating guerrilla style art… it was all very punk rock DIY stuff involving film, photography, theatrical performance and 2D art.

Q: How is it that you chose a career as an artist? Was it an obvious choice?

A: I don’t think I ever really made the choice to be an artist; it was just something I’d always done. I can’t actually remember a time in my life when I wasn’t creating art in some form or another.
Even as a child, I never liked the things that other children liked. While they were interested in pop bands and TV shows, I loved old Hollywood movie stars and would watch old black and white films religiously. My Grandmother always used to say I was born in the wrong era and would tell me stories about legends such as Bette Davis and Jean Harlow. Hearing about their struggles as artists and watching them create fantasy worlds onscreen made me want to create magic of my own. I was only about seven years old when I began devising performance art pieces with my sister, which we would show to friends, family and neighbors on a regular basis.

Q: What is your every day life like as an artist? Tell me about the creative process.

A: As a full time artist, my days are divided between the creative side of being an artist and the much harder business side of things.
As far as the creative process is concerned, I don’t have a set way of doing things. It really depends on the project I’m working on.
For instance, I recently wrote/produced/directed and performed in a short film that was part of an exhibition that opened London Fashion Week. One of my pieces of 2D artwork was printed on a huge silk panel in the show and I wanted to compliment this with a piece of film where the characters from the art came to life. I literally had only three weeks to create this work, which is an insane amount of time to do something like this especially when I didn’t have the funding to just go out and hire all the equipment/technical staff/performers that I needed. It seemed like an almost impossible task and I wasn’t 100% sure that I could deliver a finished product in time but I think the challenge also made it very exciting. With the help of some amazing friends and performers, I was able to meet the crazy deadline. It was completely exhausting but we had a lot of fun and everyone really enjoyed being part of the project.
In contrast, my 2D art is done in a very calm environment and is almost therapeutic. There’s no fixed deadline and I usually start with a simple idea, for example, the most recent piece was created with just the words ‘hung parliament’ as inspiration. I’m a storyteller at heart, so each piece has it’s own narrative. There’s usually a piece of poetry/writing that goes with the art so I go back and forth between the visuals and the text as the world I’m creating begins to take shape.

Q: Who are your role models? Do you have any artists that have influenced you more than others?

A: I take inspiration from all kinds of strange places but the main influences for my work are people like Georges Méliès and the Lumière brother who were pioneers in early filmmaking. I love the Silent Film era and watching someone like Méliès work and trying to understand his thought processes is fascinating to me. It helped me understand that it’s possible to create anything if you use your imagination to it’s fullest potential.
Franz Kafka is also someone who has influenced my work, since my days in theatre. I remember reading the Trial for the first time and being in awe of his writing. Performing something like this live is also an incredible experience and enables you to take theatre to a completely different level.
